Should I work for free?

A part of working in the design industry are friends and family that ask if you can whip up a logo in 10 mins. For free. If you find yourself in that kind of situation... this chart should come in handy!

We're preparing some new work and also feeling our way through mini drama's like transporting our stall to the east coast - but we'll get there eventually and the experience will be worth it.

To our Perth friends and the rest of the world - we'll keep you posted with our new work (and update our shop too while we're at it).

To our Melbourne friends - please come and say hi! It will be lovely to meet you :)

This is an interesting video showing the unique selling point of a bicycle shop in Brooklyn where there is a multitude of other bike stores.

wall painting

I was in Macau over the summer break and was given the opportunity to paint some walls in a relative's friend's holiday apartment. I don't usually work with paint and this was my first time doing something on so large a scale, but it actually went a lot smoother and faster than anticipated.

Its really hard to find really fine paintbrushes in Macau so for some of the thinner lines on the girl, I thought an eyeliner brush might do but it was still too thick so in the end I had to use the splintered ends of a wooden chopstick from the takeaway I had the day before. I stand by my belief that chopsticks really are the most versatile cutlery :P

Downstairs wall:
This wall is seen right when you enter the apartment and they wanted it to have a relaxed/fun/holiday feel; the colours were kept quite soft and neutral so the piece wouldn't clash or compete with the furniture they had picked out.

Upstairs kid's playroom:
The main challenge here was coming up with a design that suited both a boy and a girl and which would also be something that they wouldn't easily grow out of; in the end we settled on a typographic outcome with lyrics from a pop song which everybody there liked to sing. I liked the fact that the words are quite cute but also have relevance to both young and older audiences.

mmm... Cupcakes by Sugar Bella Delights

If you were able to attend our Masked Exhibition Opening Night last year, you might have had a taste of Sugar Bella Delights' cupcakes.

We asked Francesca, (creator, owner and head chef) a few questions about her light and fluffy, gorgeous, and to many; Perth's best tasting cupcakes.

Why cupcakes?
Because cupcakes are awesome and I love them. They're fun, tasty, convenient and relatively clean (because you don't have to cut them and wash the plate afterwards). There are no limits to what you can do with them and eating them brings back many happy childhood memories and happiness. I helped my mum make them when I was younger. You're never too old for cupcakes.

What is different about Sugar Bella Delights?
Have you ever seen a beautiful cupcake, picked it up, taken a bite and been disappointed with the texture inside? I spent a lot of time perfecting the mixture before working on the toppings. The texture is light, not too rich and very very yummy AND they also look good. I will only make my cupcakes with fresh quality ingredients…. this means no pre-mixes - all baked from scratch, no preservatives, and for the toppings I don't use RTR icing… instead I freshly make my own buttercream and chocolate ganache (excluding my self-made flower decorations). I stick to cupcakes with the occasional wedding top cake.

How would you describe Sugar Bella Delights if it were a person?
Fun, colourful, vibrant, young, spontaneous, versatile and determined.

Give us an awesome story…
I decided to start Sugar Bella Delights during a time when I was off work for 4 months due to a little kitchen accident in my day job. I just can't keep my hands still and I wanted to cook. I had already been making cupcakes for my family with great compliments so I thought I'd do a little research. I found that many cupcakes offered used packet mixes… and I was disappointed when trying a cupcake that the taste would not equal its look.

I love cooking and to find something to share that love with the rest of the world and to give my own artistic expression is important to me. I love the smiles on my customers faces when they tell me about which cupcake they would like and then after the event describing how everyone was so excited to see them and loved them. Nothing is a better compliment to a Chef when the plate comes back empty.
